Top 11 Highest Paying URL Shortener to Earn Money Online
Has L&D Been Hijacked By ‘Identity’ Politics?
I got asked an interesting question last week on a panel at an Learning and Development conference. Where is L and D? Is it advancing or regressing? Interesting question.
In many ways it has advanced by embracing technology. Few individuals or organisations of any scale ignore online solutions to deliver learning and development. There has also been some movement towards taking research more seriously. I meet far fewer people who believe in learning styles or NLP. There seems to be much more awareness of learning theory and by that I mean cognitive science.
On the other hand, these advances have been matched by a serious reversal - the swallowing, lock, stock and both barrels of 'identity' politics. Gone are the days when HR and L and D were at the forefront of personal development. Much 'training' is now targeted at protecting the organisation from their own employees. Employees are now subjected to a tsunami of compliance and identity training . Much of what is actually delivered via an LMS is actually protective training, or as almost everyone says, 'tick-box' training. We know it and learners know it. We have to be honest about the fact that they are often openly contemptuous about this form of 'training'. Somewhere along the line our development agenda got hijacked.
Identity and training
Training that establishes difference also implies exclusion. Fixing favoured identity groups, seeing some as oppressed and others oppressors is a destructive force. And when HR aggressively promotes and 'us' and 'them' culture it does us all a disservice. When we become the managers and administrators of difference, serving up a never-ending diet of identity and diversity training courses, we swirl around in our own echo-chambers. We become the seekers out of 'wrong-think', policing ordinary people, as if they were stained by original sins. It results, not in rational consensus within an organisation, but the false exaggeration of difference.
Leadership
One specific identity group that has been put on a pedestal is 'Leaders'. We have thrown resources at Leaders and Leadership training, as elitist an approach to employee engagement as I've seen in my 35 years in this business. In a desperate attempt to appear legitimate we have turned 'elitism' into a sort of training cult. No one would seriously call themselves a 'Leader' without being ridiculed. This form of single group identity is a serious distortion of real needs in organisations.
Values
Another facet of identity politics has been the unedifying sight of organisations forcing faux values down the throats of their employees. I have values and have no interest in HR telling me what my values should be. Strangely alliterative – all starting with 'I' or "C' they are abstract nouns that bear no relation to the real world or the workplace. Worse still are those values that fit some acronym, where at least some of the values have been made up to fit that word. They want to shape your identity by imposing their values on you. They are, of course, largely ignored or treated with contempt. Few can recall them, fewer still care.
Diversity
The rot set in long ago, when HR thought it should take the role of therapeutic diagnosis. Myers Briggs, a flawed and crude tool, has been used to determine people's lives. As if this weren't enough, a slew of interrogative techniques, from learning styles (a fiction) to NLP and mindfulness, were employed to caricature, categorise and, in some cases, condemn ordinary people. There has been no end to this slicing and dicing, based on dubious diagnostic techniques. The evidence is clear. Diversity training does not work.
Unconscious bias
It has now reached surreal levels of interrogative nonsense, with courses on 'unconscious bias'. Not satisfied with superficial courses making us consciously compliant, HR suddenly started to probe our unconscious. How did that happen? What on earth gives anyone in HR or L&D the right to even think that my unconscious is open to their investigation, something to be probed by some half-baked questionnaire that has no scientific validity? This is completely out of control. The assumption is that certain out-of-favour groups - white, male, working class - are guilty by virtue of being born, so leaden with bias that they need to be re-educated. It's a pathological view of human nature, where minds must be interrogated and forced to admit their guilt. This was never our goal. HR and L&D is full of good people but it has been hijacked by a form of policing that has abandoned personal development for personal identity.
Conclusion
All of this is fuelled by so called 'experts' who design courses on 'X', train others to deliver those courses as 'practitioners' who sell their courses for '$Y' so the Ponzi schemes begin. Rather than focus on the real needs of organisations, real knowledge, skills and competences, we have been sucked into a world of exaggerations, abstract concepts and fictions, where people have to be identified, shamed and re-educated, to be 'correct' and 'compliant'. Time and time again I hear pleas for HR and L&D to be more business focussed. What we've done, in reality, is turn our back on real business issues, to focus on therapeutic concerns, that invade people's privacy. So let's get off the identity bandwagon and get back to business.
That's How I Role: Baela The Immovable!
by Randy
Hello there! I would like to start off with an apology for not updating recently. It's been pretty hectic for us, and we've been focusing on a lot of other things. Thanks for coming back!
What I have today is a Pathfinder character that I believe would be very fun to play. She's one tough dwarf. A single-class monk, this character shows the fun stuff you can do with archetypes. Archetypes for the Pathfinder system were introduced in the Advanced Player's Guide. Archetypes swap out features of the base class with a set of themed abilities. Some are minor, and some make it feel like you're playing a whole new class.
Baela is themed on the immovable power of stone, befitting her Dwarf heritage. The archetypes used are Monk of the Sacred Mountain, Monk of the Four Winds and a splash of Qinggong Monk. The Monk of the Sacred Mountain trades some of the movement-based monk class features for ones themed on immobility & toughness. The Monk of the Four Winds is for monks more connected to the natural world, and the elements. Quinggong monks are disciplined users of Ki magic.
Baela Duerstan is a dwarf ascetic from Highhelm. Her mother, a caravan guard, died when she was in her teens, and she was taken in by the temple of Torag. Upon coming of age, she chose to leave the area and see the world. She now wanders from town to town, sometimes a caravan guard herself.
Baela Duerstan Dwarf Monk (Monk of the Sacred Mountain/Monk of the Four Winds/Qinggong Monk) Lawful Neutral Level 10
Str 14, Dex 12, Con 18, Int 10, Wis 20, Cha 6
AC: 28 (+2 Dex +5 Wis +6 Natural Armor +3 Monk +1 Dodge +1 Deflection) 30 (+2 Shield if she does not move)
HP: 113 (10d8 + 50 Con + 10 Toughness +9 favored class) DR: 1/-
Saves: Fort +11, Ref +8, Will +12
Move: 50
Weapons:
Unarmed strike +11/+5 2d6+3
Flurry of Blows +12/+12/+7/+7 2d6+3
+1 Shuriken +10/+5
+1 Shuiriken (flurry) +11/+11/+6/+6 1d2+3 10ft
Skills: Acrobatics +15, Stealth +15, Knowledge: Religion +13, Perception +18
Feats: Ironhide, Toughness, Dodge, Scorpion Style, Weapon Focus (Unarmed Strike), Shaitan Style, Gorgon Strike, Improved Natural Armor x2, Medusa's Wrath, Improved Unarmed Strike, Elemental Fist
Magic Items:
Belt of Physical Perfection +2, Headband of Inspired Wisdom +4, Monk's Robe, Amulet of Natural Armor +2, 50 +1 Shuriken, Ring of Protection +1
Baela is, simply put, tough. Though she is highly mobile, she shines most when she can stand still and hit things; she is not subtle in the least. Her Scorpion Style feat will allow her to stop opponents in their tracks (and open the possibility of using Gorgon's Fist & Medusa's Wrath). The Elemental Fist feat is her go-to move for dealing unarmed strike damage. It will allow her to use any element, but it is best employed for acid damage, which is boosted by the Shaitan Style feat (which she should activate in every battle at the beginning). When she needs to withstand a barrage of attacks, standing still and using a Ki point for her monk dodge bonus will get her to Armor Class 34. And don't forget that her Damage Reduction (DR 1/-) is always active (she can double this with a Ki point).
For advancement, Baela should take Stunning Fist next level. As a monk, she will get one use per level (and an additional use from her Monk Robe). If she uses Stunning Fist in a Flurry of Blows attack, she can get two additional attacks at her highest base attack bonus (assuming the opponent fails his save). At 12th level, her Monk of the Four Winds archetype replaces Abundant Step with Slow Time, the ability to use a swift action to spend 6 ki points to get 3 standard actions that turn instead of one. At 13th level, either Crushing Blow or Hammer The Gap are good feat choices. You may also use the Qinggong Monk archetype to swap out Diamond Body for another power not replaced by one of the other archetypes: Restoration is a very good choice.
Alternately, a one-level dip into Fighter with the Unbreakable archetype would round out the prerequisites for the prestige class Stalwart Defender anytime after 9th level. Though a Monk is not the ideal path to get there, it offers a lot to Baela: a larger hit die, a dodge bonus to AC, damage reduction (it won't stack with hers, but will eventually surpass what she has), the defensive stance and a variety of defensive powers.

SaltCon 2019, Preview
SaltCon 2019 is about a week away. Held at the end of February, this tabletop gaming convention is a great place to be for everyone who enjoys all of the non-electronic games we play with our families and friends. Thursday, February 28, through Sunday, March 3, with all types of games and events. The die-hard players can even push through and play non-stop (like we used to do when we were much younger).
This is the 11th year for SaltCon and my 8thyear attending either by just being a player attending, volunteer running roleplaying games (RPGs), or being on panels. Although the role of my attendance has changed, the experience has been good every year and has kept me coming back for more.
One aspect that sets SaltCon apart from other conventions where gaming is available is SaltCon is about gaming, for gamers, hosted by gamers. Gaming is not a sideline attraction, it's the main event. This isn't the only convention that does this. But the group putting together SaltCon does it well.
What you can expect
The first year I went I didn't know what to expect. It was in a hotel where I had been training for my day job. I knew the size of the place and figured it would be a couple dozen people playing some games they'd brought with them. I grossly underestimated.
The game rooms were packed with players. There were enough players for the convention to move the following year to a larger location. That growth continued to where it is held at the Davis County Convention Center. Last year I know they had over 1200 people in attendance (I know it was more but at least that many). This year they expect the same numbers of gamers. This is a good match for the size of the location. There are a lot of people, but not so many to make people crammed.
From a previous year |
You can bring your own games. People bring their own games because they might be looking for a place they can meet up and play or find new players. However, there are a number of different ways to be playing games you don't have. You can play the games others have brought. SaltCon also has an extensive game library. The library has great older games and new games just coming out. There is no extra charge to play the games and they have a system for using the convention badge for quick and easy check in and out to allow more time at the table. A part of the games SaltCon provides are included in their 'play to win' section. Play any of the games there and you are entered into a drawing to win it.
Not only players attend. Every year SaltCon hosts the Ion Awards for game design. For the designers, there is Prototype Alley where you can play or demo games being worked on. I have enjoyed playing these games including some that are now available on the market. These are not just local developers. I've had the opportunity of meeting people from across the United States and Canada. You can get a jump on what is hot by sitting in on these games, then you can let friends know what to watch for. Those games that are farther along can also be found by a number of vendors sharing their games.
If you have ever wanted to be the first to have a game, then you need to check out the companies there. There are always independent game companies presenting new games. The booths are another great place to play some fun new games. Along with the games, there are artists and other groups. There is always something for everyone and it is easy for me to find more than I can afford.
If you are looking for something older, there is the 'games trade and swap meet'. Last year the trading corner was quite the hive of activity. I saw games from my childhood (and that is going back awhile). There were also newer games people found just didn't match their style of play. If you have games you aren't playing, it is a great place to turn them into a little cash, or new games.
SaltCon has RPGs. I know last year they were running a couple dozen tables. This year they are doing at least that many. D&D and Pathfinder are represented along with a number of other systems. I have played games that were in development along with some big name games like D&D, Star Wars, Paranoia, and Seven Seas. The last couple of years, the D&D group has run a multi-table player event that was amazing.
Along with playing the RPGs, there is a mini painting competition. This isn't the only tournament taking place. There are many throughout the convention for fun, prizes, and national qualifiers.
Panels are also available about games, gaming, and developing games. You can find out more about how to be part of the industry. There are people involved in different levels willing to share their experiences and knowledge.
Podcasting has been a part of the past and I expect to see podcasters there again. You can see what they are doing and how they do it. You might even end up on one if you look around and watch what is going on.
SaltCon is a fun place to be. I'm looking forward to being there. There is no way I can cover everything that will be taking place in one short article, so check out their website (SaltCon home page). Find something of interest. And meet us there. Tell people hi and why you're there. You'll find you've just become part of a larger family with a lot of new friends.

Fight Night Store Loading
Tweet #FNProfessor
What up everyone! Well I have been seeing lots of people upset over the Fight Night Store and XP points lately. When you try to get into the store it stays on the loading screen. You also receive no XP for fights either. Its rather annoying.
I'm not sure exactly what is going on, but if you are still having issues with your game, this is how you fix it. I just got all my XP back and everything. The only thing that suck is that you have to do this process every time you play the game. I don't know if it will forever be like this. but here is how to get past the Fight Night Store Loading problem.
